All season tyres are made for use all year round, so there is no need to switch between summer and winter tyres. They grip well on all surfaces, including snow, and are a safer alternative to driving on summer tyres in cold weather.
How all season tyres work
The rubber compound in an all season tyre adapts quickly to changes in road temperature. That gives a smoother, quieter drive than winter tyres, which are stiffer to cope with extreme conditions.
In some European countries winter tyres are required by law because of heavy snowfall. In the UK, with milder winters, all season tyres are an excellent choice for year-round performance.
No tyre change every six months: all season tyres can save money overall.
How to tell if your tyres are all season
All season tyres carry specific markings: M+S (mud and snow), or the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol (3PMSF). Winter tyres can carry the same marks, so the best check is the pattern name on the sidewall, for example CrossClimate 2, which you can look up.
Some pattern names make it obvious: All Season, AS, 4S, 4Seasons or CrossClimate.
Are all season tyres affordable?
An all season tyre can cost more than a standard summer or winter tyre. But because you avoid a tyre change every six months, it can save you money overall.
